Welcome to AFA's Fundamentals of Aviculture Course. AFA promotes the advancement of aviculture through educational programs that support improved husbandry practices, conservation, research and legislative awareness. Development of Fundamentals of Aviculture was made possible by a grant from Pet Care Trust, and by funding and other support from the Schubot Exotic Bird Health Center, and the College of Veterinary Medicine at Texas A&M University.
Fundamentals of Aviculture is a completely self-paced course in "read-and-test" format. Each quiz is scored and recorded automatically, so there is no need to wait for results. No additional materials, books or workbooks are required. Chapters in this first level provide the student with working knowledge of avian anatomy and physiology, reproductive functions and behaviors, illness prevention and detection, and aviary construction; an understanding of birds' taxonomic assignments, avicultural history and advancements, domestication of birds in aviculture, and laws and regulations governing aviculture; keys to understanding parrot behavior, pet parrot behavior modification and training, and much more.
